Child Sexual Exploitation and Interventions

Child sexual exploitation (CSE) is a form of child abuse where a child or young person is manipulated, coerced, or forced into sexual activity in exchange for things such as attention, money, gifts, drugs, accommodation, or perceived protection. UK safeguarding guidance stresses that no single sign confirms exploitation, but patterns of concern should prompt early intervention and referral to children’s social care or safeguarding leads.

Online grooming is a significant and growing pathway into child sexual exploitation in the UK. Perpetrators use social media, gaming platforms, and messaging apps to build trust, manipulate emotions, and normalise sexual behaviour. This can lead to sexual abuse, exploitation, image sharing, or offline meetings. UK interventions increasingly focus on digital safeguarding, education, and early identification of online risk.
